The legend that was Gary Charles
Has to be up there as THE worst player Redknapp ever bought.

Bought from Benfice with a dodgy knee and a serious drinking problem, he played a massive 6 times for us in three years.

It only gets better after his career finished:

"After the end of his playing career, Charles struggled with alcoholism. He was twice imprisoned — first for drunken driving and soon afterwards for cutting off his electronic tag to go on holiday to the Costa del Sol.
In September 2005, he was arrested and convicted for assaulting a woman in a taxi office in Clay Cross, north east Derbyshire.
After the jury was unable to reach a verdict, a retrial was ordered. Between the trials Charles was jailed for turning up to court drunk. At the later hearing, he admitted he had an on-going drink problem. He was subsequently fined and given a suspended sentence and a community service order.

Charles was jailed for 12 months in December 2006 after committing a public order offence whilst serving his suspended sentence"

And who can forget being found pissed in his car with his own shit smeared all over the interior. Nice.

Quick question - Who was the agent invloved in the deal to bring him to West Ham?

He used to drink in the pub opposite Raffels (the Albert ?) in Canning Town quiet a bit early 90s

Always seemed a really nice bloke happy to talk West Ham and football in general

Pity he went down hill

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
Certainly up there with the worst of Redknapp's deals. Touch and go if he's THE worst though. There's some pretty stiff competition.

I give you:
Marco Boogers
Titi Camara
Raggy Soma (the next Bobby Moore according to HR when he signed)
Hayden Foxe (the new Rio)
Ilie Dumitrescu
Florin Raducioiu
Christian Basilla ( remember him?)-No,I thought not. Cost a shedload in wages and loan fees though

And who will ever forget the solitary appearance in goal of one Sasa Ilic who, thankfully, was only signed on loan.

My grandmother used to get sent to Dirty Dicks to get Gin for her mum when she was a little girl. However she took the pledge in 1916 and never touched a drop again.
Apart from a cherry brandy at Christmas, just to be sociable.
And a little nip of medicinal gin to settle her stomach for lunch.
And a little nip before her afternoon nap.
A little nip after her nap to set herself up for dinner.
And a small taste to help her get to sleep at night.

Byt apart from that she never touched a drop.

I'm not saying alcohol addiction isn't a terrible problem, but it is an indisputable fact that you can stop at any time.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
Addiction is a mental illness... It completely galvanises, absorbs and controls peoples' minds and changes them as a person...

It's not something that can be cured with a snap of the fingers...

An addict is an addict for life... Some are fortunate enough to find the help that they need to break their habit but that mental illness is always there - they just learn to control and deal with it...

Something that can be stopped at any moment is not chronic.

Yeah, it's sad... Drinking desroys your mind...

Think he's coaching at Lincoln City now...

Hope he's sorted himself out...

Met Gary Charles through an old friend, seemed like a pleasant enough bloke.
A shame he went off the rails.

Nurse

I always think people don't take alcoholism seriously enough. Awful addiction for those affected - not just the afflicted, but as you say, their loved ones too. Every day a constant battle against a drug that is freely available and advertised and in your face.

You turned out alright though!

Joe C,

Away at Jokerit in Helsinki, Inter Toto Cup. Jones only played the first half. Drew 1-1 Lampard free kick. One of the best weekends of my life. Fri morn to Sun night, planes, trains and being pissed as fuck.

I was also at Liverpoo when Jones play acted and got Cottee sent off. Never liked him then so wasn't bothered when he failed spectacularly for us.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
Where alcoholism is concerned, I have always thought 'there but for the grace of god'.

Alcoholism runs like a thick seam throughout my family. Both parents, 2 of my siblings, countless aunts, uncles and cousins all have the gene or the jones or the head sickness, or whatever is at the root of it.

I have no idea how I managed to be born without having foetal alcohol syndrome. Plus her breast milk would have been 99% Smirnoff Red Label, had she been bothered to feed me naturally.

Feel sorry for Gary and all dipsos everywhere. Feel even sorrier for the people who love or depend on them.
